What's the deal with porting vocaloids into UTAU?

Everytime I see this topic brought up it seems like everyone has a different answer. Some people say it's illegal to create a port entirely and other people say it's okay as long as you don't distribute it/bought the vocaloid first.
If you get "caught" porting the UTAU do you get fined or something? I mean it's technically stealing/pirating software, but I don't think I've ever heard of Yamaha and/or Crypton cracking down super hard on UTAU ports except for the early days of Polkaloid.

It's against the end user license agreement of vocaloid, and by purchasing, installing, and using a vocaloid, you've agreed to those terms. Whether or not it's okay depends on whether you feel like violating the agreement. If you were to openly tell the company that you're violating their agreement, it makes it a lot easier for them to deactivate your software, deny support requests, or pursue legal action.
