Thoughts on Plug and Play Covers?

I'm curious, how does everyone feel about people who make plug and play covers? Do you think it's lazy, acceptable, etc.?

Plug and play is when someone just drops an UTAU into a UST, renders it, and aligns it with the off vocal without actually mixing it, editing the UST, etc.

Personally, I think plug and play covers are really lazy. I personally rather have someone take the extra time to go into Audacity or something and make sure the mixing is okay rather than just lining up some tracks. ANYONE can line up tracks, and I personally think you should put more effort into your work than that. Why ruin something that has the potential to be so great?

It's not like making half decent covers is completely inaccessible either: I used audacity for three years and I've done some of my best mixing in there. Obviously, it's not professional grade, but it's better than no mixing.

Anyway, post your thoughts below! I want to hear what you think!

My personal opinion is that plug and play is just fine if you're just starting out. You don't necessarily know any better, and it's a part of the learning process.
After learning more and possibly looking up tutorials and such, plug and play shouldn't be all you do. You then have enough experience to start doing some mixing, and possibly some tuning. So if it's this person's like, first cover ever, I see no problem with plug and play. If it's your 10th cover and you're still only doing plug and play; that's when it becomes lazy.

That is lazy as hell. -_- Like jeez, there's not knowing how to mix, and not bothering to try.

It is really lazy, honestly. I feel like it isn't trying. Why bother if you aren't gonna try?
That's exactly how I feel. I rather have someone post one cover a month if it's highquality and they put effort in, rather than listen to a million crappy covers posted daily.

I'd say I have a bad opinion of them. That being said, I know for a fact that I have done plug-and-play covers before. Best way to sum up my opinion of plug-and-play USTs is that I find them acceptable if you're doing a quick test or sample to see what people think of the voice/tuning/etc. and use a small part of the UST, because that's a test, not a full cover. Now, a full cover without any effort is just lazy. although, again, im sure i did it before at least thrice

Honestly I don't feel like it's a bad thing but it is a bit lazy
And by plug and play you also mean not editing usts and not tuning? I don't do that because I mostly use VCCV usts and it's hard to tune but I'm learning. ^^ but I think people shouldn't do that alot and get to learn UTAU more.

I agree 100%. There's no way you can just jump into audacity for the first time and create a perfect cover. It ain't happening. But on the other hand there are people that have been in this fandom just as long as I am that still do plug and play and pretend that it's okay.

Yeah I agree. Doing plug and play for personal things like just testing an oto, a new voice, resampler, etc. is fine. But why produce a cover a day if none of them sound good, ya feel me?

Yeah plug and play is okay for newbies, or people who just want to learn. But when you want to make quality covers, get some attention, etc. then why would you plug and play? Like there will be people who plug and play and don't even listen to the UST then complain when they get dislikes because of how off the timing, mixing, or key is and I'm just like what??? What else did you expect?

Plug and play is a lot easier to do, but there's more value/quality in something that you take effort to do. However, as someone who writes songs and wishes to hear covers of them, I don't think my songs will be considered easy to popularize until they're easy to cover. Plug and play is lazy, sure, but if the given resources are good, the outcome should be okay enough, and for a song that nobody would otherwise listen to, every cover is important.

I sometimes plug and play for testing vbs, but I try (keyword "try") to at least do some editing to the ust (I don't go full out tuning because I'm not that patient and I lose focus easily) but I'm trying to edit more and more so then I can finally tune whole usts without becoming bored
