Is it possible to manually make VCV USTs?

Sorry for the noobish question, but I just started trying to get into VCV, and I get the concept, but is it even possible to create hiragana VCV USTs manually? Because when I try to copy/paste hiragana characters into the notes, they just appear as question marks. And my locale is set to Japanese. Is there some special patch/plugin I need to allow me to type/paste hiragana into the UTAU program, or is it only possible to make hiragana VCV USTs by using the Lyric Diphonizer / CV-VCV converter?

Yes, but I find it's easier to use the tool and then edit the results if they sound wrong.

If it is possible, how do you get around the "hiragana becomes question marks" issue, then? And the tool probably is a lot easier, but I'm having trouble getting that to work, too.

What you need to do is type in the lyrics into the little lyric bar in Utau. After that, click the add button and then use the Romaji to Hiragana plugin tool and then lyric diphonizer to make them VCV lyrics

This is the link to the Romaji to Hiragana converter. Select the notes on your ust before using it and then use the lyric diphonizer

If you already have locale set up, then you should be able to use the Japanese keyboard by switching languages via Win Key+Space (if you haven't added the keyboard yet, you can do this through Control Panel -> Language - if you have icon view- or 'Add a language' under Clock, Language, and Region if you have category view). There's no need to copy-paste kana from another source and half the time the fonts aren't recognized - that's why you're getting question marks.

It's better to just make your UST as a CV and convert with one of the many plugins available. You just make things unnecessarily tedious when you have to switch back and forth between inputs for each note.

I agree with Suyeon. Here's how to use the Romaji to Hiragana converter that I linked above

Ah, okay. Thank you both so much for the help!

I use bizz's "僕の考えた最強の(ry" (iroiro) plugin as Rome-ji to Hiragana converter.
And also use Zteer's "連続音一括設定" plugin as CV to VCV converter.
*I use UTAU's ver. JP.

I was looking to download one of those lyric plugins you suggest but the links don't seem to work.
Anyway my problem is odd because the lyrics seem to be written right but it only sings vowels.
