How have your covers improved?

There is a different between your UTAU improving and your covers improving.
Of course my utau improved from a CV bank with bad accent to a multipitch vcv, which of course sounds better, but at core my covers never improved much. My best mix is still a cover from 2014. Pure luck I think since my other covers around that time were way worse.
I never went through that awkward stage of recording my utau with a build-in mic or a $5 one and then mix it with Audacity. My first banks was already recorded with a Blue Snowball and I always mixed with Adobe After Effects. I also been very lucky to get help from very good users, who helped me with oto'ing and gave me a mixing 101.

But at the end my covers were and are still pretty mediocre. They are too good to be called bad, but they are not amazing either and I have been on this plateau for 4 years now. In all honestly when I picked up utau again last year, my mixing was worse than before. lol.
Gonna try switching to FL studio now, in order to give my covers some extra punch and get me out of this horrible stagnation.

As illustration here a few covers in chronological order. Notice how I never really improved lmao xDDD

I haven't improved much with mixing, but it's still better than before. Tuning and actual UTAU quality have definitely affected how my covers sound, though!
Almost all of these are covers with my UTAU, so I apologize for that ^^;

I had two other covers from this time, but this was the only one I uploaded. It was the demo for my CV voicebank, Konne Yuri... and her VB was horrible, so we don't talk about that.
I listened to this cover a few weeks ago and it wasn't too bad, but some of the harmonies were too loud.

Oh boy, this song. This is one of the worst covers I've ever done. I wasn't used to having a VCV or higher-quality UTAU, and it shows. The vocals are too loud, the harmonies are way too loud, and it's just painful to listen to. This one had the same outcome... and I tuned that, so it almost sounds even worse.
(the only good part about these is that they were the first to use Yuri's new, less weeb-ish surname)

This was 8 months after Monochrome Blue Sky. The harmonies are still off, but not nearly as bad as before. I think the tuning's better, too.
singason is also a huge milestone for me because it was my first chorus cover and I added custom harmonies. It sounds somewhat decent, so that's good!

This is my favorite cover and also my best one! It probably helps that the only two things I needed to mix were the main vocals and the instrumental, which is only a piano. It was simple, yet it worked out really well!

I know I only uploaded this a few days ago, but it's still a milestone. It's my first full cover with an append and my second UST release. Once again, the instrumental is only a piano, but there are also harmonies. At least they aren't too loud this time! The only issue here was the piano volume being a bit too high.

First of all I learned to tune and not plug n play lol and actually mix. When I compare, I usually compare this:

As far as my own UTAU is concerned, he finally has some VBs that I am content with, and for Covers I finally found a good duet partner for Sora in Hakone Shima, instead of randomly choosing partners, Sora and Shima actually fit

7 months ago :

vs me like a month ago and I'm working with vcv covers now and my mixing is less horrible, the mixing on the first one was done by a friemb of which is gud though, but the mixing in the second one is me! I still haven't made my own UST yet, but I'm getting there!!

Yes, I agree. I added my "milestones" which are my banks improving. I only really use my UTAU so with banks improving it helps up the quality of the cover overall. My mixing has improved too, of course. I went from using Audacity to FL Studio and using EQ, reverb, compressor etc.
