Notes

- I use IPA in this post: IPA symbols of each sound are in [].

Sounds that are often tricky for foreigners

- vowel y (and sometimes “u” and “ö” depending where you’re from)
- r sound

Vowels

Finnish has 8 vowels in total: a, e, i, o, u, y, ä, ö

[ɑ] a - “a” sound like in English “car"

[e] e - Same than Japanese e/え

i - Same than Japanese i/い

[o] o - Same than Japanese o/お

u - If you speak Spanish then congratulations: Finnish u sounds...

Hello everyone!

If you have downloaded and listened Toka Aki's Finnish VCV VB as your reference you might have notice that some of his "a" sounds doesn't always sound open back unrounded vowel [ɑ] but more like open central unrounded vowel [a] (aka. "Japanese あ") in some.

This is due to my accent I am half Japanese, please don't let that confuse you! Thank you!

My slight accent haven't however effect my UTAU's Finnish understandability but ya know: it's better if you can say "a" correctly like [ɑ].

[ɑ] will sound definitely better for Finnish than [a]!

Otherwise Aki's Finnish is "accent free".
